Rachier to defend his seat in Gor Mahia’s next election
Gor Mahia chair Ambrose Rachier has stated he will defend his position when the club holds its elections.
According to the long-serving chair, the club’s constitution does not bar anyone who contested in the last election, held in 2020, from running again.
“Our constitution is very clear. It allows those who vied and won in the 2020 elections to seek a second four-year term. I will present myself as a candidate for the top seat,” Rachier said in a statement quoted by a local publication.
Court order
In January this year, the Sports Disputes Tribunal (SDT) ordered Gor Mahia to conduct its election within 90 days. The SDT order came following a case that was filed by Bernard Omollo, who sued Rachier, his deputy chairman Francis Wasuna, secretary Sam Ocholla, and treasurer Dolphina Odhiambo for failure to conduct elections as stipulated by the club’s regulations.
SDT ruled that the four-year term, which began with the 2020 elections, came to an end on August 8, 2024.
While explaining the delay to hold the polls, Rachier said that he has sought a court order for the postponement of the exercise.
“We had convened an AGM in September 2024 to plan for elections. Unfortunately, a member went to the SDT to challenge the office and disrupt the process. That is what caused the delay, as the matter has been pending in court.
“I only went to court to request a postponement of the elections to June so that we could focus on our quest to win a record 22nd league title. The court will issue its verdict on March 11,” he added.
During the next election, Rachier is expected to be challenged by Dolphina, who has declared interest in the position of the chairman.
“I am not just vying — I’m going for the chairman’s seat. Any other contender should feel free to join me at the ballot,” Dolphina revealed.
