Principals express Azimio copycat riot fears in schools
By Oliver Musembi, July 25, 2023Secondary school teachers have expressed concerns that the violence in anti-government protests is likely to cause unrest in schools.
School heads say they fear that the effects of the violence may spill over to learning institutions and appeal to politicians to resort to alternative ways of resolving disputes to avoid compromising the safety of learning institutions.
Thika High School Principal Julius Muraya and his Chania High School colleague James Gitau said previous incidents of chaos led to students setting schools on fire.
“We have before witnessed school unrest triggered by actions of political violence and the current situation is not different,” said Muraya.
They were speaking during the Thika West Sub County education day at Chania Boys High School in Kiambu County where Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro was the chief guest. Nyoro and area MP Alice Ng’ang’a told Azimio la Umoja leaders not to disrupt school programmes through violent demonstrations.
“Our exam candidates should be given a conducive atmosphere to sit for the exams when schools reopen for the third term. This cannot be so when we have unnecessary demonstrations,” said Ng’ang’a.
