“Efforts to combat the illicit alcohol trade in Western Kenya continue to yield positive outcomes through sustained and coordinated police operations. In Kakamega County, officers from Matete Police Station conducted patrols in the Chevaywa area and its environs, leading to the arrest of four suspects found in possession of 70 litres of illicit brew,” the National Police Service stated.

Authorities also intensified operations in Vihiga County, focusing on areas known for illegal chang’aa production.

“In Vihiga County, a further three suspects were arrested and 52 litres of chang’aa were confiscated, following an operation by officers from Serem Police Station,” the police added.

All seven persons of interest are currently in custody awaiting arraignment, as investigations continue into the sources and networks supplying the illegal brew.

“All suspects remain in police custody pending arraignment,” the statement confirmed.

Police officials say the operations form part of a broader strategy to protect public health and safety, particularly in regions where illicit alcohol consumption has previously contributed to accidents, poisoning, and social unrest.

“These operations reaffirm the National Police Service’s commitment to eliminating the production, distribution, and consumption of illicit alcohol,” the service emphasised, highlighting the need for sustained vigilance and community cooperation in tackling the trade.

The National Police Service has called on residents to report any illegal brewing activities, stressing that community participation is key to curbing the menace.
