The National Police Service (NPS) has confirmed it is investigating an incident that disrupted a service at St. Peter’s ACK Church in Witima, Othaya, Nyeri County, on Sunday, January 25. Several political figures, including former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, were in attendance at the time.

According to a statement from the Office of the Inspector General, police reports indicate that a teargas canister was thrown inside the church during the service, disrupting proceedings. Several vehicles within the church compound were also reported damaged. The NPS said there were no reports of injuries.

The Central Regional Police Commander immediately directed the Nyeri Criminal Investigations Officer to secure the scene and start investigations. The Inspector General of Police also instructed the Internal Affairs Unit to investigate with urgency. The NPS emphasised that such incidents are unacceptable and have no place in Kenya.

The police reminded Kenyans that churches are sanctuaries and should not be affected by political differences or violence. Anyone with information about the incident has been urged to report to the nearest police station or contact the toll-free numbers, or via WhatsApp.

The statement stressed that the NPS abhors all forms of violence and will take firm action against anyone found responsible.

“Those that shall be found to have perpetrated this callous disruption of the church service shall be dealt with firmly and swiftly as per the law,” the statement said.

Gachagua claims police attack

The police response comes after Gachagua accused a group of rogue police officers of attacking worshippers. He claimed tear gas was used inside the church, vehicles were destroyed, and one of his cars, a Toyota Land Cruiser, was burnt.

Gachagua also claimed that some attackers were armed with AK-47 rifles. He dismissed claims that the incident was staged for public sympathy, arguing that access to tear gas, assault rifles, government vehicles, and police uniforms is restricted.

Gachagua’s motorcade was reportedly targeted as he attended the service. Videos and photographs from the scene showed chaos inside the church, with worshippers running for cover. Gachagua was evacuated through a fence by his security team and residents. Several women and children were reported to have needed medical attention following tear gas exposure.

The incident has drawn reactions from political leaders. Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka condemned the attack and held police accountable for ensuring public safety. Former Interior CS Fred Matiang’i called the use of teargas on worshippers barbaric and demanded an independent probe. Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen said investigations are ongoing.
