Police officers, their prison counterparts and other security agencies officers will start receiving salary increments this month, President William Ruto has said.

Speaking at State House, Nairobi on Wednesday, July 24, 2024, during the swearing in of new Commissioner General of Police Prisons Service Patrick Aranduh Mwiti, President Ruto said the security enforcement officers will receive their first installment of their increase in salaries this month.

Ruto’s commitment

Ruto said the increase in salaries for the men and women in uniform is a fulfilment of the commitment he had made.

“As a commitment that I made to our men in uniform from this  month we will be living up to our commitment to enhance the salaries of our police men, our prison officers in line with our commitment that we made.

“So you are coming to office with good tidings for men in the prisons service because this month they will have the first installment of their increase in salaries together with other security agencies as a commitment I made last year,” Ruto said.

He pointed out that the fulfillment of the commitment puts a heavy responsibility on the shoulders of the new prisons commissioner.

“Again Mr. commissioner that puts on your shoulders a heavy responsibility of greater expectation of both the country and myself of your service and all the other government agencies,” he stated.

Ruto on descent housing for officers

The president went ahead to promise descent housing for prison police officers across the country.

The housing program, Ruto said, will be undertaken by the State Department for Housing in conjunction with the Prisons Service.

“You are also aware that were undertaking a huge program on ensuring that our prison service has a descent housing. We will be working with you and your team to identify the areas, to work with state department for housing to ensure that our prison officers, men and women, live in descent housing across the country.

“And again, I will be expecting of you to provide the leadership and stewardship in that area so that we can accelerate the housing program of our prison men and women,” Ruto said.

In June this year, President Ruto said there will be a new salary scale for police officers as he flagged off the first group of 400 police officers to leave for Haiti for operations to contain gangs terrorising residents.

He used the occasion to announce new salary structures for police starting July 2024.
