Man dies from injuries sustained inside police cell in Kuresoi South
Months after the death of Albert Ojwang in a police cell in Nairobi over alleged mishandling by police officers, Keringet police station has found itself in another storm after a man who was held inside the cell sustained injuries and died while receiving treatment at Keringet subcounty hospital.
According to close reports by the Nyumba Kumi leaders, Benard Cheruiyot, a 30-year-old man from Kimororoch village, Tinet ward, Kuresoi South, was apprehended on Friday, 27 March 2026, and handed over to the police.
On the other hand, Shandevine Chebet Kigen, the wife of the deceased, said that the police officers were cold to her when she went to check on her husband.
She explained detailes of how she found out of the demise of her parner Benadrd Cheruiyot.
According to Shandevine, on the dawn of Sunday, March 29, 2026, she went to visit her husband only to be told that he had been taken to the hospital.
After rushing to check him, she found him in a critical condition and was quickly asked by the Officers who had taken him to the hospital to locate a car that could facilitate his referral to another health facility.
However, she explained that after returning from the vehicle hunt, she found that her husband had passed away.
“He had a swollen body, I was shocked by what happened to him because it appeared he had a lot of injuries,” she said.

On the other hand, the Nakuru County Police Commander, Samwel Boit, said that the deceased was reported to have banged his head on the cell wall, injuring himself and that the injuries could have caused his death.
Boit said that DCI have commenced investigations into the matter while IPOA have also commenced their investigations and said that any person who will be found culpable will face the law.
“We have established that there were 10 people together with the deceased in the cell on the very night and so we have sought the court intervention to hold them longer to enable conclusion of the investigations”, he said.

Meanwhile, the angry locals led by Christopher Sitienei called on the Ministry of Interior, Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, to effect changes at the station, saying that the officers have caused locals unexplained suffering.
They said that some of the officers have been so corrupt and drunk and have been discharging their duties with impunity.
“We want to appeal to CS Murkomen to ensure that he cleans this station because we are tired of these officers. They have made our lives unbearable”, he said.
