Highway robbery crackdown intensifies
The Mtwapa arrest came on the same day police in western Kenya captured two persons of interest linked to a spate of robberies along the Eldoret–Malaba Highway.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the two were arrested following a stealthy operation by officers from Matete and Webuye Police Stations. The pair are believed to be part of a gang that has been ambushing motorists during late-night hours, robbing them of valuables and leaving travellers traumatised.
Following days of surveillance, detectives moved in and arrested the suspects before they could stage another attack. Upon interrogation, the duo led officers to their hideouts along River Nzoia and Nabuyola Village, where police recovered a cache of stolen goods.
The recovered items included three 6kg gas cylinders, assorted electronics, and vehicle batteries believed to have been taken from motorists along the busy highway. The DCI said the arrests marked an important step in curbing rising highway crime in the region.
Police have called on motorists to be cautious, especially when travelling at night, and to report any suspicious incidents immediately. Both operations underline ongoing efforts by Kenyan law enforcement agencies to tackle theft and robbery cases across the country.
