Police nab 2, intercept 30 rounds of ammunition on Thika–Garissa highway

Authorities in Lower Yatta Sub-County have intercepted illegal ammunition during a routine roadblock along the Garissa–Thika Highway. The operation involved a multi-agency security team monitoring traffic in the Kanyonyoo area.

In a statement shared on X on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, the National Police Service said the officers discovered the ammunition in a public service vehicle during a search, raising concerns about the transport of illegal arms along major highways.

“Yesterday, a multi-agency security team manning a roadblock along the Garissa–Thika Highway in the Kanyonyoo area of Lower Yatta Sub-County intercepted a public service vehicle,” the National Police Service said in a statement on X.

The recovered backpack contained 30 rounds of live ammunition. Two suspects were immediately taken into custody for questioning and are awaiting formal charges.

“Upon conducting a search, the officers recovered a backpack left on a passenger seat containing 30 rounds of live ammunition,” the statement added.

The vehicle in which the ammunition was found has been impounded, and all seized materials have been secured as evidence for ongoing investigations.

“Two suspects were arrested and escorted to Kanyonyoo Police Station, pending processing and arraignment in court. The vehicle was detained, and the recovered ammunition was secured as an exhibit,” the police said.

The National Police Service emphasised its ongoing commitment to tackling the illegal circulation of firearms and ammunition, highlighting the importance of such operations in enhancing public safety across the country.

“The National Police Service remains committed to combating illegal firearms and ammunition, and to enhancing public safety and security,” the statement concluded.

NPS noted that such measures are critical for preventing potential violent crimes and ensuring the safety of road users in the region.
