Police confirms death of Kenyan officer in Haiti
The National Police Service (NPS) has confirmed the death of a Kenyan police officer serving in the Kenyan-led Multinational Security Support Mission (MSS) in Haiti, following a tragic road accident on Sunday, August 31, 2025.
In a statement issued on Monday, September 1, 2025, NPS revealed that the officer was among those involved in a traffic accident along the Kenscoff–Pétion-Ville road in the Pèlerin 9 area at around 5:00 p.m. Haitian time (2:00 a.m. Kenyan time).
The next of kin of the deceased officer has already been notified.
The accident claimed the lives of the Kenyan officer and two civilians, while eight other MSS officers were injured. NPS said three of the injured are in critical condition and are receiving specialised treatment in the hospital.
“The National Police Service (NPS) received the tragic news early this morning of the death of a Kenyan police officer serving in the Kenyan-led Multinational Security Support Mission (MSS) in Haiti. The next of kin have been notified,” the statement read.
Body repatriation
NPS further confirmed that arrangements are underway to repatriate the officer’s body to Kenya, even as the MSS continues to work with the Haitian National Police (HNP) to ensure the injured personnel receive the best possible medical care.
“The National Police Service (NPS) extends its deepest and most heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and relatives of the fallen officer and assures them of our unwavering support during this time of profound sorrow,” the police stated.
“Meanwhile, the MSS, in collaboration with the Haitian National Police (HNP), is making arrangements to repatriate the officer’s body to Kenya and is ensuring the injured personnel continue to receive the best possible medical care.”
Despite the tragedy, NPS reaffirmed its commitment to the mission.
“As a service, we remain committed to establishing lasting peace and security for the people of Haiti,” NPS stated.

Haiti MSS road accident
MSS Spokesperson Jack Ombaka, in a statement issued on Monday, September 1, 2025, said that the tragic accident occurred on Sunday evening, August 31, 2025, along the Kenscoff–Pétion-Ville road at Perlerin 9.
According to the statement, the accident occurred around 5:00 p.m. during a recovery operation involving two MaxxPro vehicles.
Ombaka noted that one vehicle, while towing the other, developed mechanical problems, leading to the fatal crash.
“On Sunday, 31 August 2025, at approximately 1700 hours, officers of the Multinational Security Support Mission (MSS) were involved in a tragic road traffic accident along the Kenscoff–Pétion-Ville road at Perlerin 9. The incident occurred during a recovery operation involving two MaxxPro vehicles. While one vehicle was towing the other, it developed mechanical problems leading to the incident,” the statement read in part.
MSS officers’ deaths
This latest incident adds to a growing list of tragedies involving MSS personnel.
In March 2025, two MSS officers were killed during an ambush by armed gangs on the outskirts of Port-au-Prince.
Earlier, in June 2025, another officer lost his life in a roadside bomb explosion, marking the first fatality from an improvised explosive device since the mission began.
