Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka has endorsed Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna for the presidency and Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino for the Nairobi governorship amid the opposition’s political succession plans ahead of the 2027 general election.

Speaking during a Linda Mwananchi rally in Taita Taveta on Saturday, July 18, 2026, Onyonka hailed the two politicians as the future of the country’s leadership.

Kaka yangu mdogo, kiongozi wangu, rais ambaye anatarajiwa, mheshimiwa Sifuna. Atakayekuja kama gavana wa Nairobi, mheshimiwa Babu Owino,” Onyonka said.

Political consultations within opposition

The endorsement comes amid heightened political activity within the opposition, with leaders allied to the Linda Mwananchi movement stepping up campaigns against President William Ruto’s administration while calling for governance reforms and economic relief for Kenyans.

Sifuna, who serves as the Nairobi Senator, has in recent months emerged as one of the opposition’s most vocal figures, frequently criticising the Kenya Kwanza administration over the high cost of living, governance and accountability.

His profile has also risen following his removal from the ODM Secretary-General position and Senate leadership, developments that have drawn support from several opposition leaders.

Babu Owino, the Embakasi East MP, has similarly maintained a strong political presence in Nairobi, with supporters increasingly urging him to contest the Nairobi governorship in 2027.

The legislator has built his profile through vocal criticism of the government and advocacy on youth and education issues.

Osotsi endorsing Sifuna

Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi has also endorsed Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, saying he has what it takes to lead the country.

While speaking during the burial of the uncle of Rural Urban Private Hospitals Association (RUPHA) boss Brian Lishenga on Saturday, March 14, 2026, Osotsi stated that the Linda Mwananchi faction has many capable leaders, with Sifuna being among them.

“Kwa timu yetu ya linda mwananchi tuko na watu ambao wametosha kuongoza Kenya, na mmoja wao ni kijana wenu Edwin Sifuna,” Osotsi said.
