Police in Mombasa have arrested a man in a series of machete-linked robberies that have left residents of Changamwe living in fear.

In a National Police Service (NPS) statement posted on X on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, the NPS confirmed that officers from Changamwe Police Station apprehended a man, popularly known as “Omosh”, during a routine patrol in the BBC area.

According to police, Omosh has been wanted in connection with multiple violent robberies, which he allegedly committed alongside several accomplices. The group is said to have been armed with machetes and had been terrorising residents in different parts of Changamwe Sub-County.

The NPS said the suspect was arraigned in court earlier today and is now facing two counts of robbery with violence. “Officers from Changamwe Police Station arrested Stephen Omondi, alias ‘Omosh,’ a notorious wanted criminal, while on patrol in the BBC area,” the police said in the statement.

The arrest has brought some relief to residents who have endured weeks of tension and insecurity, with reports of night attacks and robberies targeting pedestrians and small business owners.

Police believe that Omondi’s capture could help uncover more details about the criminal network operating in the area. The NPS confirmed that a manhunt has been launched to track down his accomplices, who remain at large. “Police officers have launched a manhunt to trace and apprehend his accomplices, who are still at large,” read part of the statement.

The National Police Service praised the officers involved for their swift action and dedication to duty. “The National Police Service commends the officers involved for their vigilance and commitment,” the statement added.

The NPS also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and cooperate with security officers by sharing information that may help in the ongoing pursuit of other suspects linked to the machete-related robberies.

The arrest of Omondi comes amid heightened security operations in Mombasa County, as police move to dismantle criminal gangs and restore calm in neighbourhoods that have recently reported rising cases of violent theft.
