The National Police Service (NPS) has confirmed the resumption of its nationwide police constable recruitment following the removal of court orders that had earlier suspended the process.

In an official statement seen by People Daily Digital on Tuesday night, November 4, 2025, Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has revealed that the recruitment will take place on November 17, 2025, and will be conducted simultaneously in all sub-counties across Kenya.

Earlier, the Nairobi Employment and Labour Relations Court had declared the advertised police recruitment exercise of 10,000 officers by the National Police Service Commission (NPSC) as unconstitutional. In a ruling made on Thursday, October 30, 2025, Lady Justice Hellen Wasilwa declared that the NPSC is not a national security organ under Article 239(1) of the Constitution and hence lacks the mandate to conduct the recruitment exercise.

“A declaration is hereby issued that the recruitment by national security organs under Article 232(d) of the Constitution can only be done by the national security organ itself, not any other entity outside the security organ,” Justice Wasilwa’s ruling said in part.

The judgment followed a petition filed by former Transport Minister and Kilome Member of Parliament John Harun Mwau, who argued that the NPSC is not a national security organ under Article 239(1) of the Constitution to carry out the recruitment drive.

Basic requirements

According to the NPS, prospective applicants must satisfy several basic requirements. They must be Kenyan citizens aged between 18 and 28 years, possess a valid national identification card, and hold a minimum grade of D+ in KCSE, including at least a D+ in either English or Kiswahili.

Applicants are also required to be physically and medically fit. Male candidates must have a minimum height of 5 feet 8 inches, while female candidates must be at least 5 feet 3 inches tall and not pregnant at the time of recruitment or during training.

Furthermore, anyone with a criminal record or pending court cases will be disqualified from participating. However, National Youth Service (NYS) graduates who meet the set qualifications are encouraged to apply.

The NPS has also emphasised that the entire recruitment process is free of charge, warning that anyone caught engaging in bribery or fraudulent activities aimed at influencing the exercise will face prosecution.
