Police announce CBD road closures due to presidential activities
Traffic disruption is expected in Nairobi’s Central Business District following road closures around the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) and City Hall.
According to a police statement issued on Thursday, April 9, 2026, the measures are due to two high-level events taking place within a shared security zone.
“We wish to inform the public of temporary traffic disruptions within the Central Business District today, Thursday, April 9, 2026,” the statement read.
“Due to the shared security perimeter of these venues, the following roads will be closed until the conclusion of the events: City Hall Way, Wabera Street (sections adjacent to City Hall) and the Supreme Court/Parliament Roundabout.”
The closures come as Nairobi hosts the Second Africa Urban Forum at KICC, which opened on Tuesday and runs until Friday. The forum has brought together African Union leaders, city planners and housing experts under the theme:
“Adequate Housing for All”. Participants aim to shape urban policy ahead of the World Urban Forum and advance Agenda 2063 goals.

Ruto to address assembly
Later in the day, President William Ruto is expected to deliver a historic address to the Nairobi County Assembly at City Hall at 2.30 pm. Speaker Kennedy Ng’ondi confirms the invitation, noting that this marks the first time a sitting head of state addresses a county assembly since devolution began in 2010.
Ruto is expected to brief MCAs on the progress of the Ksh80 billion cooperation deal between the national government and Nairobi County.
Police urge motorists to avoid the affected roads and follow directions from traffic officers.
“We urge motorists to use alternative routes and follow the directions of traffic officers on site,” the advisory states. “We regret any inconvenience caused.”
Officials say the closures will remain in place until both events conclude, and motorists are advised to plan their journeys early and monitor updates from the Kenya Police Service.
