Former Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) secretary-general Wilson Sossion has decried the politicization of the Finance Bill 2024 saying it has been subjected to mob justice.

Sossion who was speaking on K24 TV insisted that the Finance Bill will be amended and passed by parliament, whether Kenyans demonstrate or not.

Bill politicised – Sossion

“This finance bill has been hijacked and has been turned into a political tool and is being subjected to mob justice which is not a good thing,” Sossion quipped.

“The finance bill will be amended and the final product will be determined by parliament. Whether there are demonstrations or no demonstrations.”

His comments come on the back of planned demonstrations by various factions including the opposition and other civil organisations ahead of the tabling of the controversial Finance Bill 2024 in parliament.

The bill that has come under fire for its revenue-raising measures will be tabled in parliament on Tuesday, June 18, 2024, where legislators will debate its contents for two days before voting.

Sossion however supported the move by members of the public to put pressure on MPs saying the legislators were indebted to doing what is right for the people and the country, urging MPs to put political inclinations aside ahead of the finance bill debate.

“The right to self-expression is guaranteed in our constitution. So for those coming to parliament, it’s okay to pile pressure on Members of parliament so they can apply their thinking more in the finance bill,” Sossion said.

“They will invoke their wisdom and the sovereign power donated to them to that which is right for the country. It is not doing something for the president or Kenya Kwanza, it is doing it for the entire country.”
