Rarieda Member of Parliament Otiende Amollo has given key insights from the just concluded United Kingdom (UK) elections, which he oversaw.

Otiende Amollo who was the Head of Mission, team of Observers of Parliaments of the Commonwealth, under the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association(CPA), on Saturday, July 6, 2024, said he had released the preliminary report of the UK elections.

UK election fairness

The preliminary report, the lawyer-politician says, shows the the UK election was fair and reflective of the voters’ wishes.

“As Head Of Mission, Team of Observers Of Parliaments Of The Commonwealth, Under The Commonwealth Parliamentary Association(CPA), I Just Released The Preliminary Report Of The UK Elections As Fair & Reflective Of Voters Wishes,” he stated.

The lawmaker listed a number of key insights he noted from the elections that saw Keir Starmer emerge as the new UK Prime Minister.

Trust in UK electoral process

He noted that unlike other countries, the trust in the UK electoral process is high.

The lawmaker also pointed out that the entire voting process in the UK is manual, unlike other countries including Kenya, that use electronic system.

Otiende Amollo also notes that the counting of the votes in the UK begins and ends at the constituency level.

Billboards and posters

He has also pointed out that there are no visible billboards and posters for politicians contesting for various seats.

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) lawmaker has also noted that all polling officials are volunteers, and that there are no political party agents at polling stations.

“Of Note 1. Trust in the Electoral Process is high, 2. Entire Process Manual 3. Voting Count begins & ends At Constituency 4.Delimitation Done & Accepted W/O Acrimony 5. No Visible B/Boards, Posters et al. 6 Voting Officials are Volunteers 7. Hardly Any Party Agents At Polling Station,” Otiende Amollo stated.

President William Ruto on Saturday, July 6, 2024, sent a message to the new British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, congratulating him on the Labour Party’s general election victory.

“On behalf of the government and the people of Kenya, I wish to convey my utmost congratulations to Sir Keir Starmer on the overwhelming support garnered by the Labour Party at the just concluded elections and his subsequent appointment as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

“His election is testimony to the deep yearning of the citizens of the United Kingdom for progressive politics and policies embodied by the Labour Party,” Ruto remarked in his statement.
