Siaya Governor James Orengo caused drama at Opoda Farm after being issued with a walking stick by a Kamba elder.

This happened during the visit by Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, who had gone to pay tribute to Raila Odinga’s family on Thursday, November 6, 2025. Kalonzo was accompanied by an entourage from the Kamba region, including elders, Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti, and her Makueni counterpart, Mutula Kilonzo Junior.

Kalonzo Musyoka invited Siaya Governor James Orengo to the podium to receive a walking stick, a symbol of leadership and his long-standing fight for justice, something he shared with the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

After receiving the walking stick from the Kamba Council of Elders, who acknowledged his enduring role in politics dating back to his university days, the elder noted that he had known Orengo from his days of activism, which shaped his political career. The stick, made from a tree highly cherished by the Kamba community, was presented as a token of respect and recognition.

After receiving the blessing and the symbolic walking stick, Orengo broke into a playful run, chanting “Jowi! Jowi!” and leaving everyone in stitches as he paraded his new gift from the Akamba people. After a brief moment, he settled back down.

The same occasion also saw Raila Junior, son of the former prime minister, receive instruments of power from Kalonzo Musyoka, symbolising his role in continuing his father’s legacy.

Kalonzo added that the gesture was meant to act as a link between the Kamba region, which had heavily supported Raila, and the Nyanza region, which was his stronghold.

The instruments

Kalonzo first handed Junior a bow and arrows, which he said were for guarding the territory left behind by his late father. After receiving them, Junior was shown how to shoot and asked to demonstrate, marking the beginning of his new symbolic role.

He was also given a small stool, which he was instructed to sit on while holding the bow and arrow, symbolising his duty to guard his father’s legacy as the eldest and only son. He was further given a shield, representing his role as a protector of his family and community.

In his earlier address, Orengo had praised the current standing of the Wiper Party, saying that for Kenya to thrive, it needs strong parties like the Wiper and ODM parties that cannot be swallowed by the government.

“For a strong Kenya to come, we need a strong Wiper, but we also need a strong ODM not controlled by anybody in power but by the laws of the land. I join Ruth in saying let’s not kill political parties na sisi kama ODMmsifsnye makosa ya kumezwa. kADU ilimezwa, PNUilimezwa, DP ilimezwa, Jubilee karibu imezwe,” Orengo said.
