A police officer was shot and seriously injured by another officer in a standoff outside the residence of South Sudan President Salva Kiir in Nairobi.

The incident happened on Tuesday night along Gigiri Road after a dramatic chase.

Kiir has several properties in the city which are guarded by armed police officers.

Police said two officers from Gigiri Police Station were on patrol in the area when they came across a man smoking bhang outside the residence of Kiir at about 8pm.

The man, who it has turned out is an officer, was seated along the wall when the two officers approached him and attempted to arrest him for smoking.

The two cops said as they approached the suspect he stood up and started running away, defying their orders to stop.

When the police officers challenged him to stop or they shoot him, he responded by firing at them whereby he shot one of them in the right hip.

He vanished as the other officer sought help for his injured colleague.

Senior police officers visited the scene and arrested one of the officers from the General Service Unit guarding Kiir’s home.

The arrest came after it was established that one of the guards shot and injured the officer on patrol.

The suspect was disarmed and is being detained at the Gigiri Police Station pending further investigations.

His Ceska pistol was taken for ballistic tests and analysis as part of the probe into the shooting.

Nairobi Regional Police Commander George Sedah refused to give details on the shooting.

He said there is a team investigating a shooting incident that happened in Gigiri under unclear circumstances.

But other officers aware of the issue said there seemed to have been a miscommunication that led to the shooting.

The injured officer was admitted to MP-Shah Hospital in a stable condition, police said.

Elsewhere in Isiolo, a man was shot and killed and another was seriously injured in an attack at a trading centre in Garbatulla.

Police said the incident happened in Yaq Barsadi shopping centre on Monday night and was carried out by a lone attacker armed with AK-47 rifle.

The victim, identified as Galgalo Agula, died on the spot.

A second victim was injured in the left arm and rushed to a hospital in serious but stable condition, police said.

Isiolo County Police Commander Moses Mutisya said the incident is still under investigation.

The area, along Kulamawe-Kachuru road is deemed unsafe as escaping gunmen use it to flee towards Samburu and Marsabit.

Mutisya said the attacker emerged from the nearby thicket and shot at the two people outside a kiosk.

The motive of the attack is yet to be known, police said.

A hunt on the gunman is ongoing in the area.

Elsewhere in Makutano, Tharaka Nithi, gunmen raided a home and stole more than 20 goats.

The gang slashed the owner of the home using a panga before escaping with the livestock.

Police said the attackers had arrived on board a vehicle that they used in ferrying the stolen animals.

There was no recovery made and police declared they had launched an operation for the gang behind the incident that happened on Monday night.
