Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga has dismissed claims that the family misled Kenyans about Raila Odinga’s health in the days leading to his death, saying earlier reports that the former Prime Minister was recovering were the truth, not lies.

Speaking during a press briefing on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, Oburu said the family had been transparent about Raila’s condition and that at no point did they intend to conceal the truth from the public.

He emotionally described his final conversation with his younger brother, saying Raila was in good spirits just hours before his sudden death.

“We are mourning and celebrating the life of a great leader, as I had told you before. I informed you that he was well and that he would soon be back in the country. That was not a lie; it was the truth,” Oburu said.

He added that Raila was healthy all along, and he was recovering well.

“He was very well until last night when I spoke to him. He was vibrant and happy. It is only unfortunate that this morning he got a shock that, according to the postmortem, said it was a heart attack,” he stated

He called on Kenyans to remain calm and to stand united in mourning a man who, for decades, dedicated his life to democracy and the fight for justice.

He described Raila as vibrant and full of life, even in his final days, saying his passing has left a deep void in the family and across the nation.

As preparations for the burial continue, Oburu said the family takes comfort in the outpouring of love from Kenyans and leaders around the world who have paid tribute to the late statesman.

Raila Odinga’s body is expected to arrive in the country on Thursday, October 16, 2025, ahead of a week-long national mourning period declared by the government.
