Nyeri: Police raid trading center, recover rolls of bhang
By Emmanuel Rono, May 20, 2026Police in Nyeri County have intensified the crackdown on narcotics following a raid that led to the arrest of three persons of interest and the recovery of hundreds of rolls of cannabis sativa in Kieni East Sub-County.
Acting on a tip-off from a member of the public, officers from Gakawa Police Station stormed a shop at Ichuga Trading Centre, where they suspected illegal drug trafficking was taking place.
According to a report by the National Police Service on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, a search was conducted in the shop where ninety-two rolls of cannabis sativa were recovered, concealed inside a chocolate packet under the counter.

“Acting on a tip-off from a member of the public, police officers from Gakawa Police Station raided a shop at Ichuga Trading Centre in Kieni East Sub-County that was suspected to be involved in the sale of cannabis sativa. The owner of the shop, together with another person found on the premises, was arrested,” NPS stated.
Items recovered
Further investigations led officers to the shop owner’s rented residential house, where another person of interest was found in the process of preparing cannabis rolls. A subsequent search of the house resulted in the recovery of an additional 692 rolls of cannabis sativa.
This brought the total number of recovered rolls to 784. Police also seized approximately 21 kilograms of unprocessed cannabis, five mobile phones suspected to have been used in coordinating drug sales, and assorted rolling equipment believed to have been used in the packaging and distribution of the narcotics.

“The officers also recovered unprocessed cannabis sativa weighing approximately twenty-one kilograms, five mobile phones suspected to have been used in conducting sale transactions, and assorted rolling apparatus believed to have been used in the preparation and packaging of the narcotic substance,” NPS said.
All the persons of interest are currently in police custody pending arraignment in court.
The National Police Service reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining operations targeting the distribution and sale of narcotic drugs across the sub-county and beyond, noting that intelligence-led policing will continue to guide such interventions.
