Sharp differences have emerged among elected leaders in Nyamira over the site of the proposed Nyamira University.

Leaders from the four constituencies, Borabu, West Mugirango, Kitutu Masaba and North Mugirango are each rooting to have the university located in their respective areas, a move that may hamper the dream of having a university in the county from being realised.

No university

Nyamira is one of the counties in the country which doesn’t have a university despite the region having been created as a district way back in 1989.

North Mugirango MP Joash Nyamoko is pushing to have the university located at Kiamogake while his colleagues Clive Gisairo (Kitutu Masaba), is rooting for Manga Sengera, while Steve Mogaka (West Mugirango) is rooting for the conversion of Senator Kebaso Secondary School.

On the other hand, Borabu MP Patrick Osero is rooting for it to be taken to an area in Nyansiongo.
Nyamira governor Amos Nyaribo yesterday confirmed that elected leaders and members of the community have different opinions over the site of the proposed university.

Speaking to People Daily, Nyaribo said he has called for a leaders meeting this week to exhaustively deliberate on the matter.

Identifying areas

“What all the leaders have done is identifying land in their respective areas where the university can be constructed .We are going to bring their views together which could enable us identify the ideal place and site for the university,” Nyaribo stated.

Nyaribo however stressed that the size of the land would be a major factor for consideration for the location and site of the proposed Nyamira county university.

West Mugirango MP Steve Mogaka confirmed that consultations among local leaders were still going on and urged members of the public to remain patient as they await for the final verdict.

The dream of setting up the university died about six years ago after leaders failed to agree on the ideal location of the institution.

Plans to establish the university between 2015 and 2017 flopped after some elected leaders started pulling apart over the proposal to take over a secondary school in North Mugirango constituency, while others suggested starting the university from scratch at Riakimai where the government has huge public land.

Leaders abandoned the plans after more than Sh200 million had been used to do feasibility tours by the University of Eldoret.

The institution that had been proposed for takeover is yet to fully recover on enrollment of students following uncertainty over its future.
