NTSA warns Boda Boda operators to avoid pedestrian paths
The National Transport and Safety Authority, NTSA, has called on the Boda Boda operators to avoid using pedestrians and instead use the roads.
In a statement on their X handle on Friday, February 20, 2026, NTSA noted that pedestrian walks are becoming narrower in most cities as regions are overwhelmed by the speeding population growth and rise in traffic congestion.
“Let’s respect walkways and keep them safe for those on foot. Boda bodas belong on the road, not on pedestrian paths,” NTSA noted.

These paths are not just normal walkways but important areas that guarantee the safety and movement of pedestrians. Nevertheless, the growing abuse of these routes by Boda Bodas is posing a grave threat to the safety and order of the streets.
Walkways are also designed to accommodate pedestrians, giving people a safe environment that is not subject to other fast-moving traffic on the road. They cater to school children, the old people, and daily commuters who depend on such routes as their safe and unhindered way of movement.
When boda bodas use these walkways, the pedestrians have to share the little space with fast-moving motorcycles, thereby raising the chances of accidents. The number of collisions, near-misses, and pedestrian injuries is increasing, which indicates an increasing negligence of people towards road safety on the road and urban rules.
Road congestion
Walkways are the most useful options to many boda boda riders who want to take shortcuts or escape traffic congestion. Although this can be considered effective for the rider, it affects the pedestrians’ safety, destroys traffic laws, and compromises the intended purpose of the sidewalks.
Walkway cannot be an extension of roads, but it is a different infrastructure that is designed to safeguard the most vulnerable members of the traffic ecosystem.
The communities and local authorities should take action to solve this problem. Traffic rules, such as fines when one rides on the pedestrian walks should be enforced strictly. Barriers are physical qualities that can be used to ensure that motorcycles do not enter walkways.
Meanwhile, a set of awareness campaigns among boda boda riders can be conducted to make them more responsible and respectful of pedestrians. The community attitude and conflicts can also be changed through civic education regarding the need to keep the pace on foot.
Safety in walkways

Safety in walkways involves concerted efforts by the officials and road users. The pedestrians should be provided with a safe atmosphere in which they can move without being afraid of accidents.
Boda bodas play a significant role in the transport of people in the cities, but they should not be moved off the road because that is where they belong. By ensuring the protection of the pedestrian streets, the accidents are avoided, and the culture of respect, discipline and safety in our cities is promoted. By ensuring that the walkways are not filled with the motorcycles we respect the rights of people on foot and create urban spaces where life is a priority over convenience.
