The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has announced that motor vehicle inspections will continue at its inspection centres from July 1, 2026, as part of efforts to enhance road safety and ensure compliance with the Traffic Act and the NTSA Act.

In a public notice issued on Friday, June 26, 2026, and signed by Director General Nashon Kondiwa, the Authority said inspections will cover school transport vehicles, commercial service vehicles and other motor vehicles in line with existing laws and the Traffic (Motor Vehicle Inspection) Rules, 2026.

Under Section 55 of the Traffic Act, owners of motor vehicles that are more than four years old from the recorded date of manufacture are required to book annual inspections through the NTSA service portal available on the eCitizen platform.

NTSA, however, said enforcement of mandatory inspection for private motor vehicles will be communicated to the public at a later date.

“National Transport and Safety Authority, under Section 2 (a) and Section 4 (2) (b) of the NTSA Act, No. 33, 2012, is mandated with the responsibility of registration, licensing of motor vehicles/motorcycles and conducting motor vehicle inspection/certification,” read the statement in part.

School and commercial vehicles

The Authority said inspections for school transport vehicles and commercial service vehicles will continue at NTSA inspection centres.

School management and transport operators have been directed to ensure vehicles transporting learners are roadworthy and carry valid inspection stickers. Law enforcement officers will verify the stickers using the NTSA Mobile App.

NTSA said implementation of Rule 13 on reflectorised red stop mechanical signal arms and Rule 14 on telematic systems under the Traffic (School Transport) Rules, 2026, will be communicated separately.

Commercial service vehicle owners have also been directed to ensure their vehicles are inspected and display valid inspection stickers.

The Authority added that implementation of Regulation 9(d) on telematic systems and Regulation 9(h) on underride protection devices under the NTSA (Operations of Commercial Vehicles) Regulations, 2026, will be announced in due course.

Private vehicle inspections

NTSA said inspection of other motor vehicles will begin at its centres from July 1.

Vehicle owners whose vehicles are more than four years old from the recorded date of manufacture are expected to book annual inspections through the eCitizen platform before presenting their vehicles at designated NTSA inspection centres.

The Authority clarified that it has not licensed any private entity to conduct motor vehicle inspections. “NTSA has not yet licensed any private entity to offer motor vehicle inspection services,” the notice states.

Motorists have therefore been advised to seek inspection services only at authorised NTSA centres until further notice.

Anti-corruption warning

The Authority also warned members of the public against fraud and corruption while seeking inspection and other NTSA services.

It said it maintains a zero-tolerance policy on bribery and urged motorists not to engage individuals claiming they can fast-track applications or influence service delivery.

Members of the public have been encouraged to report such incidents to the nearest NTSA office, through the Authority’s integrity email, or to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).

For enquiries and service support, motorists have been advised to use the NTSA website, Huduma Centre NTSA help desks, official social media platforms or the Authority’s customer service channels.

The notice was issued ahead of the July 1 implementation date as the Authority prepares for continued inspection of vehicles under the current regulatory framework.
