The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has issued a rainy season road safety alert warning of potentially hazardous conditions amid the heavy rainfall across the country.

The alert follows advice from the meteorological department regarding the rainy season.

In a notice on Thursday, March 26, 2026, the authority highlighted that current rainfall and foggy conditions in several areas are significantly increasing road risks due to reduced visibility and slippery surfaces.

“With the onset of the heavy rains across the country, as advised by the weatherman, the Authority cautions the Public of potentially hazardous road conditions. The ongoing rainfall and foggy conditions in some areas are significantly increasing road risks due to reduced visibility and slippery road surfaces,” NTSA noted.

The NTSA has appealed to all road users, motorists, pedestrians, and passengers alike to exercise extra caution.

“We appeal to motorists to be extra cautious and mindful of their safety and that of other road users. We urge pedestrians to use designated crossing points to avoid unnecessary risks. Passengers are also encouraged to take responsibility for their own safety by speaking out and asking the driver to stop if the situation becomes unsafe,” NTSA said.

Guidelines for Motorists

To mitigate the risks of accidents, the NTSA has outlined several critical cautionary measures for drivers.

Motorists are advised to drive slowly, as halting completely is much more difficult in rainy conditions, and they should turn on their headlights to remain visible to oncoming traffic and ensure windshield wipers are used constantly to clear rain.

The authority said maintaining a safe distance from the vehicle ahead is vital, as is the immediate removal of any stalled vehicles from the road. The NTSA issued a stern warning to motorists not to attempt to drive through flooded roads.

“Road safety is a shared responsibility. Let us all work together to make our roads safer,” NTSA noted.

Impact of floodings

The death toll from ongoing heavy rains and flash floods in Kenya has risen sharply to 81, according to the National Police Service (NPS) on March 22, 2026.

The surge in fatalities reflects the escalating severity of the disaster, as relentless downpours continue to batter several parts of the country.

In a press release, NPS confirmed that emergency response teams remain fully activated nationwide, with search and rescue operations ongoing in collaboration with other agencies.
