NLC officials put on notice over Chepchoina resettlement

The government has put on notice National Lands Commission (NLC) for colluding with cartels to frustrate government efforts to settle allottees at the troubled Chepchoina Settlement Scheme bordering West Pokot and Trans Nzoia counties.

Rift Valley Regional Commissioner George Natembeya said preliminary investigations have established that some NLC officials were openly interfering with the process and issuing double land titles.

Speaking during a peace meeting at the scheme in Trans Nzoia, the administrator disbanded the vetting committee and ordered Trans Nzoia County Commissioner Sam Ojwang and his West Pokot counterpart Apollo Okello to form another committee to help fast track the settlement of those who were evicted last week.

He said the government had deployed a high level security team comprising the General Service Unit, the Anti-Stock Theft Unit and the regular police in the volatile area to restore calm following last week’s eviction of 200 families that had encroached on the farm.
