Kenya Ports Authority has released designs for the new innovative passenger terminal set for Kisumu Port.

The new development will support both passenger and freight activities, in a bid to transform the region into a major travel hub for both local and international visitors.

“KPA engineers have finalized the design of an innovative passenger terminal at Kisumu Port, setting the stage for cruise ships to start docking at the port in the near future,” KPA shared.

According to KPA, the construction is said to be currently ongoing at Homa Bay pier, the other landing sites in the region are also undergoing refurbishment to support this development.

The Kisumu Port terminal will be a masterpiece of modern engineering and design, seamlessly combining indoor and outdoor spaces while providing breathtaking views of Lake Victoria.

A standout feature of this building is its floating roof, which harnesses natural breezes to provide maximum comfort to all who pass through it. It is estimated that the new terminal will host about 500 passengers at the jetty and 1,000 at the ferry terminal per hour.

The Kisumu Port Resilient Infrastructure Project was developed as part of a collaborative effort between Trade Mark Africa and the Kisumu Port Development Authority. It will host a range of facilities and amenities, as a way to optimize resources for the region’s economy.

“The terminal showcases a public concourse featuring concession areas, drop-off and arrival zones, ticketing facilities, and screening sections. Moreover, it includes passenger processing zones equipped with check-in counters, immigration and customs facilities, as well as port health services.

“Travellers can look forward to a range of amenities, such as restaurants, forex bureaus, and offices for taxi and tour operators within the terminal premises.” KPA added.

This project not only includes a state-of-the-art passenger terminal but also a modern cargo warehouse. These facilities ensure robust support for passenger and freight activities, strengthening Kisumu’s position as a regional transportation hub.

As seen in the recent designs, the terminal features a floating roof for natural ventilation and panoramic views of Lake Victoria. The new terminal will transform the region into a major travel hub for both locals and tourists
