Ndegwa Njiru breaks silence after being caught in Murang’a incident
By Steve Ireri, July 27, 2025Lawyer and prominent Rigathi Gachagua ally Ndegwa Njiru has broken his silence following a violent confrontation between police officers and opposition leaders in Ngonda town, Murang’a County.
In a statement on his X account on Sunday, July 27, 2025, just hours after the clash, Njiru condemned the police’s actions, describing the attack as an attempt to intimidate and silence voices opposed to the current administration.
He claimed that police, in collaboration with armed goons, had not only teargassed the group but also damaged their vehicles during the incident.
“On our way to Kangema, after the police, in collaboration with the armed goons, attacked and damaged our vehicles at Ngonda town in Murang’a,” Ndegwa wrote.

Despite the violence, Njiru insisted that the “Wantam” movement, which has gained momentum across the country, remains unstoppable and resilient.
He said the attack would not deter their political activism but instead strengthen their resolve to continue advocating for change and justice in Kenya.
“They damaged our vehicles at Ngonda town in Murang’a. The WANTAM movement is UNSTOPPABLE. Kenyans vs Kasongo =WANTAM,” Njiru stated, highlighting the severity of the state’s response.

Methu’s take
Following the incident, Nyandarua Senator John Methu also spoke, accusing police of using live bullets and teargas to disperse him and other allies of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
Senator Methu and lawyer Njiru were among a trove of opposition politicians attending a church service at AIPCA Christ the King Church in Kahuro, Kigumo Constituency.
After the service, the group planned to hold several public rallies in the county. However, they were met with a police blockade along a key road in the area.
In video footage seen online, Methu and other leaders can be seen engaging with a senior police officer, asking to be allowed to pass.
The situation quickly escalated when a teargas canister was thrown at Methu during the exchange, forcing him and his colleagues to flee on foot. The senator later claimed that live ammunition had been fired at his vehicle.
“Police officers who appeared to be under very clear instructions have attacked us at Ngonda, Kigumo Constituency, and used live ammunition on my vehicle, forcing us to escape on foot. Listen, Mr William Samoei Ruto, no amount of violence and police brutality shall change our WanTam resolve.”

Chaotic scenes
Photos taken after the incident show a damaged vehicle from Methu’s convoy, hit during the chaos. Unconfirmed reports also suggested that hired goons may have been involved in the attacks, further raising tension.
A statement from Gachagua’s team stated that both the police and the goons coordinated the ambush.
“The police, jointly with goons, blocked the leader’s convoy and started throwing teargas and live bullets. They dispersed the crowds and harassed the leaders, saying they were not allowed to hold a meeting in the area,” the statement read.
