Nandi Governor Stephen Sang was taken to task on Monday, August 25, 2025, over the competency levels of some county staff in the financial department.

During his appearance before the Godfrey Osotsi-led Public Investment and Special Funds Committee on Monday, August 25, 2025, the governor defended county staff against accusations of incompetence stemming from discrepancies in financial statements and audit queries in the 2023/24 financial report.

Senator Samson Cherargei prompted the governor to expressly state his appraisal of the department’s capacity to discharge its functions.

The matter arose after the committee noted what it termed as ‘human errors’ in the presentation of financial statements of the county and disclosure of financial statements and provision of documentation.

Faith in staff

“Do you have faith in the capacity and ability of your officers and staff? As you can see, we should be discussing better things and not dwell much with staff that works for you,” Cheragei posed.

The senator also urged the county to take action on the staff culpable for the minor mistakes, to which he agreed to act.

“With the human errors like these, are you willing to take administrative actions against your staff for committing these errors?” he quizzed.

“I have faith in them and in their capacity for continuous improvement. We have the task of improving and building our capacity,” he stated.

In his intervention, Chair Osotsi warned the governor and his CEC to get their acts together and avoid the occurrence of such issues in the next engagement for the 2024/25 queries.

Threatens to take action

Ososti noted that the committee would be forced to take stern action against the individual officers involved.

“In the previous engagement, we gave them the opportunity to organise the team of finance, so in the next financial year, if this recurs, we know very little was done, and someone must face an administrative action,” he cautioned.

According to a past statement from Cherargei, the session saw the governor finally making a long-awaited appearance before the committee as directed earlier on August 19, 2025.

“The Senate Public Accounts Committee has directed Gov. Sang to appear in person to account for money allocated in the FY 2023/24 after failing to appear today in the morning.

The accountability and transparency of Nandi County resources is NOT negotiable, however much the governor puts in place,” a statement from the senator’s facebook stated.
