A section of the Nairobi Southern Bypass was temporarily closed on Friday, April 24, 2026, following an early morning road accident near the Dagoretti area.

In a statement issued on Friday, April 24, 2026, the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) confirmed that the affected section is the Ole Sereni-bound lane between the Thogoto and Dagoretti interchanges, near Karinde.

The authority said the closure was necessitated by a traffic accident that occurred earlier in the morning. However, details on the number of vehicles involved or any possible casualties were not immediately disclosed, but photos and short video clips circulating on social media show multiple trucks.

“The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) wishes to notify motorists that the Nairobi Southern Bypass (Ole Sereni bound), between Thogoto and Dagoretti Interchanges near Karinde, has been temporarily closed following a road traffic accident earlier this morning. Traffic delays are expected along the affected section, and motorists are advised to plan their journeys accordingly,” KeNHA said in the notice.

Traffic snarl-up expected

The closure has already triggered heavy traffic along adjoining roads, with commuters heading toward the city centre reporting significant delays during the morning rush hour.

Motorists who had not yet begun their journeys were urged to avoid the affected stretch and instead use alternative routes, including the Kikuyu–Mutuini–Dagoretti (C63) Road.

Traffic marshals and enforcement officers have been deployed to the scene to manage flow and assist in diverting vehicles as emergency teams work to clear the accident site.

“Motorists who have not yet commenced their journeys are advised to consider using the Kikuyu – Mutuini – Dagoretti (C63 Road) as an alternative route,” the notice stated.

“Motorists are further advised to cooperate with traffic marshals and enforcement officers on site as clearance efforts continue.”

Caution

KeNHA Director General Luka Kimeli assured road users that efforts are underway to restore normal traffic flow as quickly as possible.

He also called on motorists to cooperate with officers on site and exercise patience as clearance operations continue.

“KeNHA assures all road users that we are working around the clock to restore normal traffic flow and ensure the safety of motorists,” the authority stated.

The incident adds to a growing list of road accidents reported on major highways in and around Nairobi, raising fresh concerns over road safety and traffic management, particularly during peak hours.

Motorists are advised to remain vigilant, adhere to traffic guidelines, and follow official updates as the situation develops.
