Nairobi, Kiambu among areas to receive rainfall this week-Kenya Met

By , March 31, 2026

The Kenya Meteorological Department (Kenya Met) has issued its weekly weather update, forecasting rainfall across several regions, including Nairobi and Kiambu, from March 31 to April 6, 2026.

Parts of the Highlands east of the Rift Valley, covering Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Nyandarua, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, Nairobi, and Laikipia, are expected to experience particularly heavy showers in the coming days.

The South Rift Valley areas, such as Nakuru, Kericho, Narok, Bomet, and Nandi, and North-Eastern Counties like Garissa, Wajir, and Mandera are also among the regions the department has specifically highlighted as likely to bear the brunt of this week’s wet conditions.

“Rainfall is expected to continue in several parts of the country, mainly over the highlands of East of the Rift Valley, South Rift Valley, and North-eastern Kenya, including Nairobi,” the forecast read.

According to the forecast, the weather for Nairobi residents will follow a recognisable pattern. Cloudy mornings and light rains will give way to brief sunny breaks before afternoon and night showers return to close out each day.

People living around Lake Victoria Basin and the broader Rift Valley region should also brace for a turbulent week, with afternoon showers, thunderstorms, and occasional overnight rains.

Residents in North-eastern and North-western Kenya should also brace for the wet spell, as the meteorological department forecasts scattered showers throughout the morning, afternoon, and night.

Rainfall is also expected in the South-eastern Lowlands, including Machakos, Kitui, Makueni, Kajiado, and Taita-Taveta, as well as along the Coast, though the showers will be more isolated compared to the heavier rains predicted for inland and highland areas.

Temperatures, meanwhile, will vary across the country. Coastal towns and arid zones such as Mandera will experience scorching daytime highs, with Mandera projected to reach 38°C, making it the hottest spot in Kenya this week.

In Nairobi, temperatures will range comfortably between 14°C and 27°C, while Mombasa will see highs of 32°C and lows of 24°C. Kisumu is expected to reach 30°C during the day, whereas Nakuru and Eldoret will remain cooler at 26°C and 23°C, respectively.

Cool nights are expected in parts of the Central Highlands, Rift Valley, and Western Kenya, with temperatures potentially dropping below 10°C overnight.

This brief respite from rainfall follows a period of prolonged heavy downpours that claimed over 100 lives, according to the National Police Service (NPS).

Authorities continue to urge Kenyans to remain cautious as unpredictable weather patterns persist across the country.
