Museveni welcomes Uhuru to Uganda ahead of DRC peace talks
President Yoweri Museveni has welcomed retired President Uhuru Kenyatta, together with a team of facilitators, to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) peace process in Uganda for a series of talks.
Uhuru was accompanied by the President of the Republic of Togo, Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé, ahead of their meeting to deliberate on the DRC peace talks.
In a statement released on his X handle on Tuesday, February 2026, the Ugandan president welcomed the contingent of panellists, noting their efforts in rebuilding peace in DRC.
Museveni said that the talks indicate the region’s commitment to dialogue and lasting peace.
“I warmly welcome His Excellency Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé, President of the Republic of Togo, who is here on a working visit as part of the AU–EAC–SADC Panel of Facilitators on the DRC peace process,” Museveni said.

Other leaders accompanying Uhuru Kenyatta include former Nigerian president Olusegun Obasanjo, former Ethiopian president Sahle-Work Zewde, former president of Botswana Mokgweetsi Eric Keabetswe Masisi and former president of the Central African Republic Catherine Samba-Panza
“This panel comprises H.E. Olusegun Obasanjo, H.E. Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta, H.E. Sahle-Work Zewde, H.E. Mokgweetsi Eric Keabetswe Masisi, and H.E. Catherine Samba-Panza. Our region remains committed to dialogue and lasting peace,” Museveni added.
Peace efforts in DRC
The meeting scheduled by these leaders is aimed at building on regional efforts to address long-standing insecurity in eastern DRC, where armed groups have operated for decades. The conflict has displaced millions of people and caused widespread humanitarian suffering.

Retired President Uhuru Kenyatta plays a central role in the peace process, where he serves as the African Union–Kenya Peace Envoy and the Facilitator of the East African Community-led Nairobi Peace Process. In this role, he has pushed for dialogue between rival groups, improved humanitarian access, and political solutions to end the fighting.
Kenyatta’s visit to Uganda follows a series of recent diplomatic engagements, including one on December 5, 2025, where he attended the signing of the Washington Accords for Peace between Rwanda and DRC at the United States Institute of Peace in Washington, D.C.
