Cabinet Secretary for Interior Kipchumba Murkomen has pledged unwavering government support to ensure justice for the late Albert Ojwang’.

Speaking during a live Senate session on June 11, 2025, Murkomen addressed the family of Ojwang’ directly, vowing, “I promise the family of Albert Ojwang’, the people of Kenya, and this August House that every effort will be put forth to make sure justice is served.”

His remarks come amid growing calls for accountability over Ojwang’s killing.

“The tragic death of Mr Albert Ojwang while in police custody has deeply pained the conscience of our nation. One life lost under such circumstances is one life too many,” he said.

Ojwang’ was initially reported to have died from self-inflicted injuries, but a subsequent autopsy revealed he was tortured and assaulted while in police custody. The revelation has ignited protests and drawn condemnation from human rights groups and digital creators, who see the case as emblematic of a larger issue of police brutality and intimidation of digital voices.

The Senate has since summoned Murkomen, Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, and the Director of Criminal Investigations to answer questions about Ojwang’s death. Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot called it a grave violation of human rights, urging a thorough investigation.

Murkomen, acknowledging the deep pain Ojwang’s family is enduring, said, “I would like to send my personal condolences to the family of Mr. Albert Ojwang, to his father, his mother, his wife, and their only child, and promise them that as a government official, I will put effort within my ministry to ensure that justice is served.”

He underscored the government’s readiness to deploy every resource necessary for investigations and to support the family in their quest for justice. “Those who were involved in these actions will be punished severely so it becomes an example that such an act should not happen within police custody,” he affirmed.

Murkomen also referenced past cases where justice was served for victims of police brutality, including the killings of Martin Comey in 2013 and Baby Pendo, saying these examples underscore the government’s ability to hold police officers accountable.
