Murkomen: Politicians now biggest threat to national security

By , April 15, 2026

Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has said that politicians are the biggest security threat facing the country at the moment.

He said some leaders are taking advantage of vulnerable young people to advance political interests, putting lives at risk through what he called goonism, a trend he said has become worrying.

He said such politicians will be dealt with firmly, regardless of their political affiliation.

“The emergence of political goons and gangs is a national security threat. Picketing has also been used by politicians to cause chaos, instead of people registering their dissent without destruction,” the CS said.

Murkomen was speaking at the National Police College Embakasi ‘A’ and Embakasi ‘B’ campuses, on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, where he assessed recruit training and ongoing capacity building for serving officers.

“Unfortunately, politicians are the greatest threat to security now. They recruit young people as goons and gangs, and this has been getting worse over the years,” he said.

He added that protests have at times led to chaos and anarchy, with some incidents involving attacks on security installations such as police stations and Parliament.

Police training overhaul

Murkomen said the National Police Service has revised its training curriculum to respond to these emerging challenges.

“The NPS is retooling and reskilling officers to ensure we give Kenyans the best, including crowd control and management capabilities,” he said.

He added that the training of recruits is designed to equip them with the knowledge, skills and mindset needed to protect peace, life and property.

Meanwhile, the CS ordered a thorough investigation into the Embu County incident, where protests led to loss of life.

“I am happy that the IG, Douglas Kanja, has sent top investigators from headquarters to probe the matter,” he said, adding that police brutality will not be tolerated.

He directed that any officers found responsible will be held to account and stressed the need for continuous training to address current security concerns.

“We are revamping regional colleges and centres of excellence to ensure our officers can access regular training with ease,” he said.
