Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has pledged accountability following the deaths of two individuals during protests in Embu County, stating that any police officers who may have broken the law will be brought to justice.

In his speech on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, at GSU Police Training College in Embakasi, Murkomen made a serious pledge to conduct proper investigations into the incident and to acknowledge those who had already expressed concern about the issue.

“I want to thank IG for picking up that issue and ensuring that top investigators have been sent to Embu to make sure that they investigate that matter and to ensure that our police officers who may have erred or may have broken the law are also brought to justice,” Murkomen said.

The sentiments from the CS are in reaction to the deadly protests that claimed the lives of two individuals, raising a lot of concern and calling both citizens and authorities to accountability.

The Embu protests had started due to increasing social discontent with the worsening situation at the Ishiara Level 4 Hospital. The residents have been on a spate of complaining about what they term the pitiable state of the facility, citing poor services and negligence that have compromised service delivery in terms of health care.

Murkomen stressed that the government is determined to maintain the rule of law and make certain that the security agencies work within its scope.

He once again emphasised that no officer would be immunised once they were proven guilty of misconduct, as there was a need to uphold professionalism and public confidence in the police service.

Police vow to cooperate with the IPOA

The NPS, in a statement on X on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, confirmed that in a press statement, the Office of the Inspector General stated that the fatalities were a result of demonstrations at Ishiara in Mbeere North. The protests arose due to increasing community anger about the pathetic condition of Ishiara Level 4 Hospital in Embu County.

The NPS has initiated a full investigation into the incident, ensuring complete transparency. The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has already received notification to guarantee accountability and impartiality in the investigation.

The service also requested members of the populace who had any information on the incident to report to the nearest police station or through official communication avenues to help with investigations.

Restating its belief in the rule of law, the National Police Service stressed that it will collaborate closely with the oversight agencies to determine the circumstances of the deaths and deliver justice.

Murkomen’s and the police’s statements come hours after former Cabinet Secretary JB Muturi demanded the shooting, demanding a probe and full accountability.
