Murkomen: Harambee Stars fostered a bond in Kenyans that will outlive CHAN
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has praised Harambee Stars for their historic run at the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), saying the team’s spirit of resilience not only inspired pride but also created a sense of unity that will endure long after the tournament.
In a statement posted on his X account on August 22, 2025, Murkomen lauded the squad for their determination and fighting spirit, noting that their progress to the quarter-finals on their debut was a clear sign of the potential that Kenyan football holds.
“We have had a great run in this tournament, and I’m deeply grateful to our team for showing us what great determination and grit can achieve,” Murkomen wrote.
Kenyans united
The CS painted a vivid picture of a nation captivated by their team’s journey, describing how Kenyans came together in support of the Harambee Stars.
“We stood together as a nation and held our collective breath at every kick of the ball,” he said.
Murkomen was particularly moved by the patriotic fervour displayed by Kenyans during the competition.
“I can’t be prouder of our country for the great patriotism we displayed throughout this tournament,” he stated,
Despite the team’s elimination, Murkomen emphasised that the experience had created an enduring legacy for the nation.
“Going all the way to the quarters at our first appearance in CHAN shows the great potential we have to do even more. We may be out of the tournament, but the bond of unity and friendship this team inspired in us lives on. Viva Kenya,” he stated.

Elimination
Murkomen’s remarks come in the wake of Harambee Stars’ elimination in the quarter-finals of the tournament, which ended in a penalty shootout, concluding a spirited campaign that had captured the imagination of fans across the country.
The national team lost 4-3 on penalties to Madagascar after a 1-1 draw in regulation and extra time.

Making their debut in the competition, Harambee Stars had taken the lead early in the second half through Alphonce Omija’s header.
However, a potential second goal by striker Ryan Ogam was disallowed for a foul in the buildup.
Madagascar equalised in the 68th minute after Fenohasina Razafimanana converted a penalty, forcing extra time and eventually penalties, where the island nation prevailed.
