Murkomen calls for professionalism in police service amid reforms
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has asked law enforcers to be diligent and patriotic as they discharge their duty.
Murkomen was speaking on Thursday, September 4, 2025, during the closing ceremony of the National Consultative OCSs Conference on the Policy Direction on transformation of police stations into centres of excellence and service delivery at the National Police Leadership Academy (NPLA) in Ngong.
”Station Commanders play a critical role in our ongoing initiative to transform police stations into community-focused service centres.,” Murkomen said.
His sentiments come after the first cohort of 287 OCSs underwent a 3-day intensive training focused on imparting knowledge and skills to make police operations and conduct more professional, efficient and responsive to the needs of the people.
Kipchumba Murkomen stressed the importance of the police to invest in leadership to be in a better position to serve the public diligently.
”I urge the officers to be honest, diligent and patriotic in their work and to invest more time learning about leadership to be able to engage effectively with the community that they serve.”
Murkomen also said the government is making concerted efforts to digitalise police services, build more police stations and increase police strength for improved service delivery.
His directive comes after confirming the restoration of law and order in Busia County after gangs that were terrorising residents were contained, thanks to the effective interventions from Kenya’s security teams working in close collaboration with their Ugandan counterparts.
”While we are pleased with the progress of this fight, which has seen arrests and the prosecution of gang leaders, our security agencies are on high alert to deal with these gangs decisively in Busia and elsewhere in the country. Smuggling of contraband goods, particularly ethanol and illicit alcohol, continues to pose a challenge.” Murkomen said on Wednesday, September 3, 2025.
”While we acknowledge the improved surveillance efforts by our multi-agency teams, which have led to the seizure of drugs and smuggled goods, we must take further deterrent measures to combat this menace. We have now embarked on asset recovery, even as we work towards harmonising our licensing and regulatory framework in the East African Community to make enforcement seamless.”
At the Thursday event, CS Murkomen was accompanied by the National Police Service Inspector General Eliud Lagat, Deputy Inspector General Gilbert Masengeli, Director Training- KPS David Birech, Commandant NPLA David Mathiu, among other senior officers.
