Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi met with Cabinet Secretaries and their Principal Secretaries on Thursday, July 2024, amid a looming cabinet reshuffle by President William Ruto.

Mudavadi convened the second National Development Implementation Committee (NDIC) where he also met with the head of Public Service Felix Koskei, who had instructed CSs to reduce their staff in line with austerity measures ordered by Ruto.

In the meeting, Defence Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale revealed that the meeting involved discussions around national issues and the need to provide regular updates on the progress of various policies and development projects to keep the public informed and engaged.

“The meeting focused on a wide range of national and international issues, underscoring the government’s dedication to tackling developmental challenges and advancing Kenya’s strategic interests. Regular updates to the public on project and policy progress were highlighted to keep citizens informed and engaged,” Duale said on X on Thursday, July 11, 2024.

Looming cabinet reshuffle

The meeting comes at a time when Ruto is facing pressure from the youth and political leaders to dissolve his Cabinet instead of a reshuffle.

“I call on the President to disband the Cabinet and reconstitute it afresh. Do away with the Chief Administrative Secretary office and office of the First Lady. Do away with other unnecessary public offices and also fire the Inspector General and presidential advisors for incompetence,” Senate Majority whip Boni Khalwale said during a recent session.

The Kakamega senator observed that the current cabinet had become irredeemable and the President should consider reconstituting it afresh.

Among the issues raised for the dissolution of the cabinet are suspicion of corruption, nepotism and inability to perform their duties effectively. Some cabinet secretaries have also been accused of flaunting their wealth to a public who are facing difficult economic situations.

“One Cabinet secretary I cannot name due to personal reasons called me to protest over my remarks over corruption in government. The public display of opulence by politicians – unless it is clear to the public the source of the funds – will definitely make Kenyans angry,” Khalwale added.

On July 5, 2024, Ruto promised to shed half of the President’s advisors abolish the offices of the spouses of the President, Deputy President and Prime Cabinet Secretary and reallocate the funds to other more pressing needs of the country.

The president also promised to intensify efforts to reduce government spending and staff to reduce the burden of public wage bill on ordinary citizens.
