Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi’s office has revealed the key issues Kenya will lobby for during the 50th G7 Summit set to be held in Apulia, Italy.

A fairer international financial system, a more representative multilateral system, and policy support for its transformative development agenda are key issues the country’s delegation will lobby for.

Mudavadi led the advance team ahead of President William Ruto‘s visit, and he was received by the Kenyan ambassador, Fred Matwanga.

“Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign Affairs Musalia Mudavadi has arrived in Brindisi, Italy, ahead of the 50th G7 Summit in Borgo-Egnazia, Apulia.

“The summit in Apulia provides an opportunity for the G7 leaders and other invited representatives to demonstrate their determination to uphold the international order based on the rule of law and to strengthen their engagement with developing countries.

“Kenya will advocate for Africa’s commitment to a fairer international financial system, a more representative multilateral system, and the importance of addressing key global challenges. Kenya will also lobby for financial and policy support for its transformative development agenda,” Mudavadi’s office said in a statement on X on Friday, June 14, 2024.

Ruto’s expectations

When confirming Ruto’s plans to attend the summit, State House Spokesperson Hussein Mohamed said the president will emphasise the importance of involving African countries in processes aimed at finding solutions to global challenges, such as climate change and conflicts.

The Head of State will also highlight Africa’s potential for green industrialisation, digital revolution, and innovation and underscore the need for reforms to achieve a fairer international financial system.

The event will run from June 13–15, 2024, and it will bring together the leaders of the seven member states, as well as the President of the European Council and the President of the European Commission representing the European Union.

“In line with previous G7 forums, representatives of a number of states and international organizations are taking part in the work, invited by the nation that holds the presidency,” the organisers of the event said.
