Kenya and Denmark are gearing up for what Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi describes as “a new phase of collaboration anchored in development and economic diplomacy.”

Mudavadi revealed this on his official X account yesterday following a meeting with the Danish Ambassador to Kenya, H.E. Stephan Schonemann, on Thursday, August 7, 2025.

The talks focused on strengthening bilateral ties in key sectors, including health, tourism, and trade, while also aligning mutual priorities ahead of Denmark’s upcoming role as President of the EU Council.

“Kenya and Denmark are working towards a new phase of collaboration anchored in development and economic diplomacy,” Mudavadi wrote.

One of the central points of discussion was the finalisation of the Novo Nordisk Foundation’s regional office in Nairobi, a move expected to bolster health sector cooperation between the two countries. Novo Nordisk, a global healthcare leader based in Denmark, is renowned for its expertise in diabetes care and chronic disease management areas of increasing importance within Kenya’s healthcare system.

“During my meeting with H.E. Stephan Schonemann, the Danish Ambassador to Kenya, we explored ways to elevate our partnership from finalising the establishment of the Novo Nordisk Foundation’s regional office in Nairobi to deepening cooperation in the health sector,” Mudavadi stated.

The discussions also ventured into the cultural and tourism space, with the two leaders exchanging ideas on revitalising the iconic Karen Blixen Museum. The museum, once the home of the famed Danish author of Out of Africa, is a celebrated heritage site that attracts visitors from across the world. According to Mudavadi, the plan is to restore and reintroduce the museum under a fresh cooperation framework that will enhance its role as a cultural bridge between Kenya and Denmark.

“We also exchanged ideas on revitalising the iconic Karen Blixen Museum under a fresh cooperation framework, as well as aligning priorities ahead of Denmark’s EU Council Presidency (July–December 2025), with a shared focus on Africa,” he added.

With Denmark set to assume the EU Council Presidency from July to December 2025, the talks also explored how both nations could synchronise efforts on Africa-focused development initiatives. The move signals a broader strategy to not only deepen bilateral ties but also position Kenya as a strategic partner in regional and continental affairs.

The meeting between Mudavadi and Schonemann reinforces a long-standing relationship between Kenya and Denmark, which has spanned decades through development projects, trade, and people-to-people exchanges. As both nations prepare for this next chapter, the focus is clear to blend health innovation, cultural preservation, and economic diplomacy for mutual benefit.
