Kibwezi West Member of Parliament, Mwengi Mutuse, has called out the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) over the recent invasion of elephants in Makindu, which has left residents with permanent scars – loss of lives and destruction of properties worth millions.

In a statement on his Facebook account on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, Mutuse criticised what he termed a knee-jerk and cosmetic response by the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) following recent deployments in the area.

“Prof. Erastus Kanga, DG, KWS, we have seen the deployment you carried out around Makindu this morning. I hope this is not the usual cosmetic, knee-jerk reaction we have witnessed in the past, and that the elephants will, this time round, be permanently relocated back to the national parks,” Mutuse said.

The legislator further demanded clarity on compensation and restitution for affected families, noting that the situation has resulted in significant human and material losses.

“Lives have been lost, people have been maimed, and crops, water tanks, houses, and other structures have been destroyed. As a result of this invasion, my people have suffered untold psychological stress. These circumstances cannot be normalised,” Mutuse noted.

Destructions

According to Mutuse, residents in the affected areas have reportedly endured repeated incidents of crop destruction and property damage, with fears growing over continued human-wildlife conflict in the region.

Mutuse also raised concerns over what he described as a lack of sustained action by the wildlife authority, warning that continued inaction could deepen public frustration.

In a politically charged statement, the MP suggested that the scale and persistence of the elephant invasion could be politically motivated, alleging possible sabotage by unnamed opponents.

“I still strongly believe that this high-magnitude elephant invasion, coupled with the lack of action on your part, is not normal and may be politically orchestrated by sympathisers of our detractors to sabotage my leadership,” Mutuse said.

“Mkipanga kumwaga unga yangu, nitamwaga yenu kwanza.”
