Saboti Member of Parliament (MP) Caleb Amisi has called for accountability and possible imprisonment of Japhet Koome following his resignation as Inspector General (IG) of Police.

In a statement shared on X, Amisi on Friday, July 12, 2024, revealed that the IG should be held accountable for the death of the anti-government protesters adding that the victims deserve justice.

“Resignation must be followed with accountability and possible jail term. Nobody child is lesser human being. NO. Not in a democratic Kenya. Life is sacrosanct! Kenya needs a renaissance!,”Amisi said.

Koome’s resignation

IG Koome tendered his resignation today after weeks of anti-government protests where security forces are accused of shooting dead unarmed protesters.

His deputy Douglas Kanja has been named as the acting Inspector-General of Police by President William Ruto pending the nomination and parliamentary approval.

“His Excellency Hon. William Samoei Ruto, PhD, CGH, President and Commander in Chief of the Defence Forces, has on this 12th day of July, 2024, accepted the resignation of Eng. Japheth N. Koome, MGH, as the Inspector General of the National Police Service, “Ruto’s speech reads.

“Pending the nomination, parliamentary approval and appointment of the Inspector General of the National Police Service, the Head of State has, in accordance with Section 16 of the National Police Service Act,  designated Mr. Douglas Kanja, CBS the Deputy-Inspector General of the Kenya Police Service as the acting Inspector-General of the National Police Service.”
