Migori County government is poised to shoulder the financial burden of running Sony Sugar football club from next season following the financial meltdown at Awendo’s sugar milling company that supported the club.

The county government intervention is a little too late though as Sony Sugar have already been expelled from the Kenyan Premier League for failing to honour three league matches.

The club will now have to pick up the pieces and start from the National Super League next season. 

Migori governor Okoth Obado and Awendo MP Walter Owino while speaking in Awendo  town last Friday during a sports event said they are working on modalities to revive the miller.

The county boss said bailing the firm out of its financial predicament will not only benefit the football club, but also sugar cane farmers who depend on agriculture.

“The football club did not just make a social contribution to the county but also added economic value to this region. Imagine the visiting teams that spent a night in Migori every two weeks.

The hotel beds occupied and other purchases made. Add to that any other fans who came along for these games,” he reminisced. 

Owino decried the lack of league action in the region, saying a lot of young talented players who held ambitions of scaling football heights risk losing hope with the death of a club that has for so long given a chance to emerging youth.
