Former Kirinyaga Woman Representative Wangui Ngirici has warned Public Service Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku that he risks being left in the political cold if the deputy president’s position is moved from the Mt Kenya East region to the Nyanza region ahead of the 2027 general election.

In a statement shared on her social media platforms on Friday, July 17, 2026, the Kirinyaga gubernatorial hopeful claimed that the entire Mt Kenya region is now firmly behind the united opposition and is determined to send President William Ruto home in the 2027 General Election.

Her remarks come at a time when CS Ruku has been leading efforts to rally support in the Mt Kenya East region, urging residents to chart their own political path instead of aligning themselves with leaders from the western side of the mountain.

According to Ngirici, the only factor currently keeping a section of Mt Kenya East aligned with the Kenya Kwanza administration is the deputy president’s position, which is currently held by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki.

She argued that the position is now under threat, with the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) reportedly eyeing the slot as political realignments continue ahead of the 2027 polls.

Ngirici claimed that if the deputy president’s seat is taken away from the law professor and handed to ODM or the Nyanza region, Ruku will have nothing left to unite in Mt Kenya East, with the region expected to fully join the rest of Mt Kenya in backing the united opposition.

‘After the UDA deputy president slot goes to the Lake Region next year, CS Ruku shall be left to unite himself. The entire mountain is in united opposition. Have a peaceful night,” Ngirici said

This comes amid the outcome of the Ol Kalou by-election, where the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), led by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, secured a landslide victory after its candidate, Sammy Ngotho, defeated United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate Samuel Muchina.

Following the by-election results, Ruku reignited the Mt Kenya East and West debate, insisting that residents of the eastern side of the mountain were not concerned with the political developments in Ol Kalou, which is located in the western part of the region.

He argued that Mt Kenya East has its own political priorities and should not be preoccupied with the outcome of the Ol Kalou by-election.

In the past, Ruku has repeatedly maintained that the time has come for leaders from Mt Kenya East, a region he says has been politically marginalised for years, to take over the country’s leadership beginning in 2027.

He has further argued that President William Ruto can secure re-election in 2027 with or without the support of Mt Kenya West, insisting that votes from the eastern side of the mountain are sufficient to return the president to State House.

Kiambu to be made a region

The former Mbeere North MP has also backed calls by a section of Kiambu politicians for Kiambu County to be recognised as a region on its own, citing its large geographical size and high number of registered voters. However, the proposal has been strongly dismissed by several Mt Kenya leaders, including former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi.
