Media Council of Kenya has faulted summons issued against Royal Media Services editorial directors by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations over the guns exposé aired on Sunday.

In a statement, chief executive David Omwoyo termed the summons are a threat to media freedom.

“In this case, where the media exposed weaknesses among some elements in the National Police Service, natural justice demands the same service cannot then purport to investigate or otherwise summon the journalists,” he said.

Yesterday, DCI boss George Kinoti said police have launched probe into the source of weapons acquired by Citizen TV investigative journalist Purity Mwambia in her “Guns Galore” exposé to establish if they may have been used in commission of other crimes.

Kinoti said the firearms surrendered by the media house did not belong to the National Police Service.
