Mbungo: why I chose Bandari over Gor Mahia

By , January 5, 2021

After taking over the mantle at Bandari FC, Rwandese coach Andre Cassa Mbungo says he snubbed Gor Mahia due to the Mombasa club’s stability.

Gor Mahia had reportedly joined the chase for the signature of the former AFC Leopards tactician but Mbungo, who walked out of his contract with Ingwe over non-payment, was convinced to move to Mombasa by the financial might of the Kenya Ports Authority-owned club.

The seasoned tactician who began his coaching career in 1999 believes he has all that it takes to beat any team in the Kenyan Premier League. Before Bandari signed Mbungo he was with Gasogi United of Rwanda.

Bandari are currently sixth in the league log and could use the experience of their new coach to reclaim their lost glory.

“I didn’t choose the money but I was attracted by the contract to deliver Bandari’s long term projects.

They showed me their ambitious plans to nurture talent and that alone convinced me,” said Mbungo.

Bandari are only taking part in the domestic competitions unlike Gor Mahia who are playing in CAF championships and one would have expected that Mbungo would choose Gor for exposure that comes with continental football.

“The challenge to work with youth and build my team really motivated me,” added Mbungo.

Mbungo boasts of a lot of experience in East African football having coached Kenyan and Rwandese clubs.

“I am humbled to coach Bandari, and I thank the management for giving me the opportunity to coach. I will work with everyone to ensure that Bandari’s target to get to CAF Confederation Cup is achieved.”

Mbungo, alongside former Gor Mahia assistant coach Patrick Odhiambo are expected to steer them, although he maintains he is at liberty to choose who to work with for the smooth running of the club.
