May 3, 2025: Top news events to look out for today

Here is what you need to know to keep up to speed with today’s happenings.
Reactions to Matiang’i’s tour
Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i on Friday, May 2, 2025, kicked off a meet-the-people tour in Kisii and Nyamira counties, marking his first major public appearance, signalling his intention to contest the presidency in the 2027 General Election.
His inaugural tour sparked mixed reactions from a section of political leaders in the country, with the reactions expected to continue.
The tour, organised by the Team Matiang’i Secretariat, brought together Gusii leaders, including Governors Simba Arati (Kisii) and Amos Nyaribo (Nyamira) and Senators Richard Onyonka and Okong’o Omogeni, as well as several MPs and MCAs.
“Allow me to join with other like-minded leaders and work together towards this course,” Matiangi said in his first stopover at Nyansiongo, just three kilometres from his home.
Mourning MP Were
Different leaders are expected to continue converging at the home of the now-former Kasipul Member of Parliament (MP) Charles Ong’ondo Were to mourn his death.
Family and friends have been meeting at the lawmaker’s Nairobi home on a daily basis since the shooting incident that took his life for burial arrangements.
The slain MP will be laid to rest on May 9, 2025, at his rural home in Homa Bay, the planning committee announced.

The committee, chaired by Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma, has, however, said the postmortem exercise that was slated for May 2 was postponed after police sought more time to complete the investigations.
“At the moment, we are just tying up loose ends. Our plan is to lay Were to rest on 9th May, 2025, but the body will be transported a day before to give the last opportunity to interact with the people,” he said.
FKF Premier League
The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League action is set to continue, with two matches set for Saturday, May 3, 2025.
In the first match of the day, Bidco United FC will host Bandari FC at Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos. The match will kick off at 1:00 pm.
Tusker FC will then host AFC Leopards at the same venue in a match that will kick off at 4:00 pm.
