Martha Koome celebrates swearing-in of 15 judges, boosting bench to historic 42
Chief Justice Martha Koome has hailed the swearing-in of 15 new Judges of the Court of Appeal at State House, Nairobi, describing it as a historic milestone for Kenya’s judiciary. The ceremony, attended by President William Ruto, raises the number of judges in the Court of Appeal to a record 42.
In a statement shared on X on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, Koome congratulated the new judges on taking up what she described as an important national responsibility.

“I had the honour of attending the swearing-in of fifteen (15) new Judges of the Court of Appeal at State House, Nairobi, in the presence of President William Ruto. I warmly congratulate the newly appointed Judges and wish them every success as they take up this important national responsibility,” Koome said.
She emphasised that the appointments marked a defining moment in the professional journeys of the judges and a critical step in strengthening the judiciary’s capacity.

“This is a proud and defining moment in their professional journeys, and a significant milestone in the continued strengthening of our Judiciary. With these appointments, the number of Judges in the Court of Appeal has increased from twenty-seven (27) to forty-two (42), the highest in the Court’s history,” she added.
Koome also expressed appreciation to President Ruto for his support in expanding judicial capacity, which she said will help improve efficiency, reduce case backlogs, and increase access to justice across the country.
“I appreciate the President for commending and supporting the Judiciary’s deliberate efforts to expand judicial capacity to enhance efficiency, reduce case backlogs, and improve access to justice for all Kenyans,” Koome stated.

Looking ahead, Koome expressed confidence that the new judges will bring fresh energy and integrity to the Court of Appeal, further strengthening the judiciary’s role in upholding the Constitution.
“I am confident that the new Judges will bring renewed energy, integrity, and intellectual rigour to the Court of Appeal. The Judiciary looks forward to their transformative contributions as we continue to uphold the Constitution and serve the people of Kenya with diligence and fidelity to the rule of law,” she said.
