Malala accuses Raila of reneging on promise to make Oparanya Treasury CS

Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) Deputy Party Leader Cleophas Malala has accused Raila Odinga of going back on a campaign promise he made to the Luhya community.
Speaking in Malava Constituency in Kakamega County during a DCP rally on Saturday, May 31, 2025, Malala said that Raila had pledged to make the now Cooperatives and Small and Medium Enterprises Cabinet Secretary, Wycliffe Oparanya, the Finance Minister, only to hand the docket to John Mbadi following his entrance to government through the broad-based system.
“This one person called Raila has been misusing the Luhya. I want to remind him that when you were campaigning in Western, you said Oparanya would become the finance minister. After you got to the government, you abandoned our child and gave Mbadi the finance ministry,” Malalah said.
Malalah wondered what informed Raila’s sudden change of stance in support of President William Ruto, as well as his past remarks that the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) is not in government.

“He (Raila) is now saying they are not in government. He is telling Sifuna to declare that they are not in government when their Luo children continue eating in government,” he stated.
“Raila came here and said Ruto is not a good person. He is a thief and he has killed people. Now, after they joined hands, he is singing his praises,” Malalah added.
Malalah’s comments follow after Raila, in a rare show of solidarity since the signing of a political pact with President Ruto in March 7, 2025, joined the head of state for a tour of the Nyanza region on Friday, May 30, 2025.
During the tour in Kisumu, Ruto reiterated his commitment to uniting Kenya and working closely with Odinga for national cohesion and development.
During the commissioning of affordable housing units in Otonglo, President Ruto dismissed critics who have accused his administration of promoting ethnic-based politics.

“I will not allow selfish politicians to divide this country along ethnic lines for their own greed,” Ruto declared. “Our primary vision is to unite all the people of Kenya. That journey is on, and there is no turning back.”
On his part, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader vindicated his engagement in the broad-based government, stating that the coming together was geared towards solving the problems currently facing Kenyans.
Raila further implored Kenyans to lend their support to the government, which he said has been delivering policies similar to his.
