Leaders send heartfelt tributes after Johana Ng’eno is killed in chopper crash
The nation is in mourning following the tragic helicopter crash that claimed the life of Emurua Dikirr Member of Parliament Johana Ng’eno and five others on Saturday, February 28, 2026.
The helicopter went down in Chepkiep, Mosop Sub-County, Nandi County. The aircraft burst into flames after hitting the ground in a forested area, leaving no survivors.
Police confirmed that all six people on board, including Ng’eno and the crew, died in the crash. Residents who rushed to the scene found only charred wreckage and thick smoke rising from the bushes.
Ng’eno had attended an event earlier that day in Endebess, before boarding the ill-fated flight. Flight tracking data shows the helicopter departed Nairobi at approximately 11:02 am.
Leaders react with shock
News of the crash spread rapidly across the country, triggering an outpouring of grief from leaders across the political divide.
National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula described the loss as devastating.
“I am deeply devastated to learn of the sudden passing of Hon. Johana Ng’eno, the Member of Parliament for Emurua Dikirr Constituency who passed on in a helicopter crash this evening,” he posted on X.
On behalf of the Parliamentary Service Commission and the National Assembly, Wetang’ula conveyed heartfelt condolences to Ng’eno’s family and the people of Emurua Dikirr, describing him as an astute and fierce leader who strongly defended his constituents.

ODM Party Leader Oburu Oginga Odinga, speaking on behalf of the ODM fraternity, termed the crash a profound shock.
“We mourn the untimely passing of Hon. Johana Ng’eno Kipyegon, MP for Emurua Dikirr, alongside five dedicated crew members who perished in the line of duty,” he said, sending condolences to their families and colleagues in Parliament.
Deputy President Kithure Kindiki also reacted to the tragedy, posting a brief but emotional message on social media:
“Devastating…”

Gachagua demands investigation
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua called for a thorough probe into the crash.
Speaking to a crowd in Nyahururu shortly after the news broke, he said:
“Tumepata habari ya kwamba mjumbe wa Emurua Dikirr, pale Kipsigis, Johana Ngeno, ameaga dunia, kwa ajali ya helicopter… Sisi tunataka kujua uchunguzi kamili.”
He added:
“We want to call for a very thorough investigation into the helicopter crash that has killed the honourable Johana Ng’eno.”
Later on X, Gachagua renewed his call for transparency.
“I call for thorough and speedy investigations into the cause of the crash that must be made public,” he wrote.
Other MPs also paid tribute. Ndindi Nyoro described the incident as traumatic, calling Ng’eno firm, courageous and dedicated. Millie Odhiambo Mabona mourned him as a brother and friend. Peter Salasya praised him as a servant leader who stood with flood victims until the very end. Babu Owino said the loss was not only to Parliament but to the entire nation.
From humble beginnings

Born in 1972, Ng’eno rose from modest beginnings in the Rift Valley. During the 1994 famine, he walked long distances with donkeys transporting charcoal and maize for sale to support his family.
He later pursued education with determination, earning a degree in International Law from a university in Ukraine, a law degree from Mt Kenya University, and a Master’s in International Studies from the University of Nairobi.
Ng’eno entered politics in 2007 and won the Emurua Dikirr parliamentary seat in 2013. He retained it in 2017 and 2022.
As chair of the National Assembly’s Housing, Urban Planning and Public Works Committee, he championed development initiatives. At the constituency level, he funded road projects, issued bursaries worth millions, and provided school buses to improve access to education. Within the Kipsigis community, he was regarded as a bold spokesperson and elder.
