Members of Kuku Group Ranch in Loitoktok are a happy lot after locals mutually agreed to sub-divide the communal landmarking the end of protracted wrangles and tension.

The 6,000 members occupying a total of 283,000 acres of land (Kuku A and Kuku B) have been engaged in heightened fights on the modalities of subdividing the land forcing the process to be banned by the county ministry of land.

The communal ranch leadership and members differed sharply after a previously disputed election leading to the cancellation of all formal meetings including the annual general meetings.

Peace accord

The intervention of the area Samuel Parashina(pictured)  who brokered a peace accord between the two warring groups was over the last five months has borne fruits. The locals agreed to form an inclusive taskforce committee to oversee the subdivision process.

In a unique joint meeting held at Marlal area of Kuku ward, locals endorsed the 53 taskforce committee members and agreed to cooperate with them.

Jubilant locals also embraced the agreement of having some parcels of land earmarked as range lands for grazing purposes only. To ensure equity members will be allocated three title deeds including a grazing parcel, settlement parcel and commercial plots area. Previously the mode of subdivision was contested as it meant that some members get prime commercial land while others end up in far flung remote areas.

The aim of the graze lands is geared towards taming local’s ‘appetite’ to sell land, orderly settlement and sustaining livestock keeping as a source of livelihood. Hundreds of members also declared a unity of purpose in raising the sh700million fee required for the subdivision process in the presence of officials from the National Land Commission (NLC) National and County ministry of land.
