The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has opened the Competency-Based Assessment (CBA) portal for the registration of Grade 3 and Grade 6 learners.

KNEC, in a statement issued on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, stated that it had opened the portal for the registration of Grade 3 learners, but learners from Grade 6 who have no assessment numbers can also be registered during the same period.

Schools have been advised to log into the portal and register their learners.

KNEC on KPSEA registration

However, KNEC insisted that learners must be registered in the Grade 6 portal first and obtain an assessment number before being registered for the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA).

“The CBA portal is now open for registration of learners at Grade 3. The portal is also open for registration of learners in Grade 6 who have no assessment numbers. Schools are, therefore, advised to log into the portal and register their learners. Please note that for a learner to be registered for KPSEA, they MUST be registered in the Grade 6 portal first and obtain an assessment number. Learners without assessment numbers will not be able to register for KPSEA,” KNEC stated.

KNEC on KJSEA

Early this year, KNEC uploaded the Kenya Junior Secondary EducationĀ AssessmentĀ (KJSEA) sample papers on theĀ Competency Based Assessment (CBA)Ā portal.

KNEC, in a statement issued on Saturday, January 4, 2024, directed all schools to access the sample papers through the CBA portal.

A guideline on how schools can access the papers was also issued, with the Grade 9 evaluation set for this year.

ā€œThe KJSEA sample papers have been uploaded on the CBA portal for access by all schools. Hereā€™s a guideline on how schools can access the papers,ā€ a statement by KNEC reads in part.

According to the issued guidelines, schools were required to access the papers by first accessing the CBA portal.

They were then required to log into the portal using the assessment centre login credentials and then click on the grade 8 portal, from where they would click on the instructions and Sample Papers button.

All the uploaded papers shall be displayed, with the schools expected to click on the view button to view a specific paper.

The KJSEA will play a significant role in shaping studentsā€™ future career paths.

Upon Grade 9, also known as Junior Secondary School, students will progress to Senior Secondary School (SSS), where they will select their career pathways.

The outcomes of both the formative (school-based) and summative (KJSEA) assessments will be used to report on studentsā€™ progress and help guide their selection of appropriate pathways in SSS.
